Evaluation Question 3: What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Based on research, the definition of a distribution is 'Digital distribution (also called content delivery, online distribution, or electronic software distribution among others) is the delivery or distribution of media content such as audio, video, software and video games.'

From researching many different film distribution companies, I searched for an appropriate, successful company to produce our thriller, I considered many things, such as, their main target audience, successful films they’ve produced, what films they specialise in and costing’s. Therefore, in my opinion, if my thriller was a real film, I would personally sell it to either ‘The 20th Century Fox UK’ or ‘Hammer Films’.

Reasons for this firstly include no disappointment would be in using ‘The 20th Century Fox UK’ as it would be a very good institution for my thriller and because they would successfully produce my thriller and I would have nothing to worry about as they have created numerous successful film. This institution also specialises in creating various different types of movies, so therefore my I know my thriller would be well produced, as it would be professional dealt with. Similarly, as ‘The 20th Century Fox UK’ is well known my film could become popular and hopefully wouldn’t lack viewings, as it is known worldwide. I also I learnt this particular company have a high profit each year.  However, as it is such a big company and is very highly spoken because of the many outstanding, powerful movies they have produced, my thriller might become of less importance because it would be a constant competition between other movies and become concerning pressure on my film.

In comparison to ‘20th Century Fox UK’, I would want to also want to sell my film to a smaller company as they would beneficially take a lot more time and care producing. I also considered using ‘Hammer Films’ in the UK, as they specialise in physiological thrillers and film noir; this is very beneficial for my film as the company will hand it professionally and have better knowledge and experience of our physiological thriller than companies that don’t specialise in this particular genre. Positively, ‘Hammer Films’ similarly gains a high profit each year. Although ‘Hammer Films is less known compared to ‘The 20th Century Fox UK’ so therefore will cost less. However, I would be prepared and happy to spend more money on my thriller, as I understand professional, popular films consist of a high budget and these are most successful.

When deciding which companies would be most suitable, I very carefully browsed each website as this can show a lot about a company. From research, ‘The 20th Century Fox UK’ shows strong aspects and looks ascetically professional and impressive. When searching for their most popular produced films, I came across many thriller and action films, for example they released ‘Unstoppable’ on November 12th, 2010 including an action thriller, and similarly they produced ‘Gone Girl’ on October 3rd, 2014 consisting of a psychological thriller, which best suits our psychological film.  Similarly, I found their company is target at a similar age range to our thriller; for instance, I met with films that included strong language and tense rushes and therefore is suitable for young adults. The company also has many films for older audience members and many families are engaged with ‘The 20th Century Fox’. As we made a low budget British film, it would add to the suitability of a smaller company which deals with these 2 minute smaller films.

I understand it is very important and crucial to sell my media product to the correct, appropriate company, as all the hard work could be lost from doing this. Personally chose those two successful distribution companies out of hundreds as I simplified it down and crossed off ones which I felt weren’t appropriate for my film. For instance, I would never ask ‘Buena Vista International (UK) Ltd’ as my film wouldn’t gain any benefits from selling it to them as their target audience is aimed at a younger generation from being a subsidiary of the Disney empire and my film wouldn’t achieve much advantage, therefore my thriller wouldn’t be popular or suit this company for this particular film.

Although I similarly think 'Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer', also known as 'MGM' or 'M-G-M' would be suitable for distributing our thriller as when we initially created our idea, my group and I felt our character would be similar to James Bond. 'Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer' distributed films, such as the hobbit, 21 and 22 jump street and the bond franchise. They are an American company specialising in distributing feature films and television programmes. It is also one of the oldest mini-major film studios.

We chose our choice sensibly as we understood that we couldn't use a company like 'Disney' as we had to put into consideration the age range for our thriller, consisting of over 18 so I understood younger companies would not be able to distribute our film. felt this company would be appropriate as our thriller on a whole is a small sequence, which constantly includes spy, espionage and action aspects; therefore 'M-G-M' would work as they focus on these types of films.
