Post-Production: Updated CD Digipak

Considering our discussion, we had regarding Fran’s first rough draft of our CD Digipak, she went away and firstly adapted it by incorporating images from our photoshoot with Juli and further attempting to recreate and alter the Digipak again after the focus group. For instance, the previous meeting as a group, fell to a time of huge importance in order to improve our Digipak. As well as our discussion, the feedback given from the focus group was massively significant; for example, individuals explained they weren’t hugely fond of the snakes used on the Digipak as they didn’t feel they were suitable and therefore looked out of place and random. Readdressing the response, some members similarly felt the product looked too formal and didn’t convert to the stereotypical conventions of our genre indie/pop, instead individual’s felt the Digipak conveyed elements of a dark and deep singer/songwriter. Due to this, Fran took into consideration all the points and as a group we made strong decisions of allowing Fran to experiment with adding more colour and adjusting details such as the lighting, fonts and position of images on the Digipak to allow the product to be seen as more fun, youthful and rebellious.

In addition to this, Fran completed some research for ideas towards for CD Digipak and found successful sources of potentially using coloured marbles to reinforce our intentions. Therefore, for the front cover of our Digipak, Fran used the software Photoshop and chose a few of the best images from the photoshoot and from previously made marbled patterns and experimented with the technique of layering and the erasing tool. As well as this, Fran also re-corrected details, such as altering the colours to tones of green. She then cut around our artist, Juli and paced her amongst the marbled background. To finish, Fran added the name of our artist, ‘SIOUX’ using the font Futura to maintain a link across the products.

Similarly, for the inside panels of our Digipak, we wanted to keep it fairly basic and simple as we felt this looked most aesthetically pleasing, clean and professional; therefore, we placed the marbled pattern across the two inside covers. Lastly, the back panel was quite straightforward as we knew we wanted the songs to be clear on the back. Due to this, we made the background of a pure, jet black and placed our Futura chosen songs on top.

After gaining response from peers as well as Harvey and myself, were all very pleased with the changes made and felt Fran was on the right track. Everyone felt our artist was cut of too much and Harvey and I also felt this needed changing. For instance, by moving the image of our artist down it will prevent her head being chopped off and will therefore look visually better. My group and I also considered adding a similar marbled pattern on the back panel, to allow all four panels to flow and link, however we aren’t completely sure as we want our songs to be clear and simple. The only comments also made were to possibly re-correct the lighting by potentially making the images a little darker to fit with our genre.
